President's Letter - Coaches for 2016/Women in Footy

Sandy Bay Lions Junior Football Club
Women in Footy – We need your help!

Hello

Yes, another message from me as your President – no one put their hand up at the AGM , so I am me back for one more year. But watch out in 2016, I will be on the lookout for a replacement in 2017. We have left the position of Vice President open for the moment, in the hope someone will come aboard as our VP in 2016, with the idea of stepping up to President in 2017. Any ideas?

I can assure you with our active committee and the support of our Football Director, Bill Trethewie, the position is not that onerous, and one you can derive a lot of pleasure from.

We are lucky that all members of the 2015 committee have remained on board for 2016, with the exception of Rohan Boman, who I thanked in my Presidents report (a copy attached) for his services to the club; plus we gained Claire Reeves (who took on the role of Secretary), Warwick Golding (his addition is already appreciated, with his computer upgrade), Al Downie and Sean Stevenson.

Coaches
I am pleased to announce the coaching appointments for 2016 have been finalised, with the exception of the U8’s. We are currently talking to a few candidates and will announce the appointment in the New Year.

Coaches for 2016 are the following:

AuskickDamien Geason/Mathew Johnson
U8 Sandy Bay
U9 Sandy Bay – BlueBen Christie
U9 Sandy Bay – WhiteDrew Moore
U10 Sandy BaySimon Chesterman
U11 Sandy Bay – WhiteTim Scott

U13 Sandy Bay BlueCarl Cazaly/Gene Phair
U13
U14 Sandy BayBane Shepherd
U16 Sandy Bay – BlueJason Coad
U16 Sandy Bay – White
U18 Sandy Bay John Barwick

A fantastic line up; who will be assisted by support from Hobart City.

Women in Footy
AFL Tasmania has requested all junior clubs participate in a women’s competition in 2016, to be run by the STJFL.

The proposal at the moment is that we will have U17’s and U12’s teams, plus promote Auskick more vigorously to all girls in our area.

The number of teams, games etc. has not been determined, although at this stage 10 junior clubs have expressed interest in putting teams together so it looks like it will be happening. Attached is some background information.

Bill Trethewie, Sarah Gillman and myself are investigating all the issues that need to be addressed for our Club to participate.

What we need to make this a reality and a successful program is for a parent or parents who may have daughters interested in playing to nominate to co-ordinate women’s footy at Sandy Bay and/or be coaches, team managers etc.

If you are interested in assisting or know someone else (I can think of a few) please contact me by email or phone and we can get the ball rolling. This is a really exciting opportunity for our Club and the community, so let’s get behind this and make this initiative a great success!

Finally on behalf of the Club, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Tim Johnstone
President
