Sandy Bay Lions Junior Football Club

Welcome to Season 2015, and all the best to the players and coaches for the coming season.

The Under 18’s commence on Good Friday, with a game against New Norfolk at the TCA at 10am, whilst other sides play their first game on the Sunday after Easter. There will be an U8 gala day at Queenborough.

It is pleasing to advise we currently have over 270 players registered, with an expectation of over 300 boys playing for the Lions this year, spread over 21 teams. A huge thank you to Ian Warner and Bill Trethewie for all their efforts with the online registrations and assisting with the sporting pulse issues.

Auskick is being launched on Sunday 26th April, 9am at Lower Queenborough. Ben Christie has agreed to oversee the Auskick, with my assistance, for the first few weeks, until hopefully a parent or parents put their hand up to take over from Ben, who has now been doing it for six years. Registrations will be taken on the day, and there will be a BBQ provided for the boys.

During the first few weeks, there will no doubt be some teething problems with gear, roster, juggling players etc, please bear with us as the League sorts out the roster, and coaches, managers and the committee sort out the rest.


Volunteers

There has been a significant amount of work undertake over the past few months to get ready for this season, and without volunteers there is no way we could fill so many teams, and accommodate so many players.

A new committee was formed at the AGM in November 2014, and it was pleasing to report we welcome several new committee members, plus many of last year’s committee remaining. This year’s committee and some of their roles are listed below:

We are lucky again that Bill Trethewie has taken on the role of Director of Football. Bill has done a sensational job in coordinating all teams with training allocation, registrations, coaching accreditation, police checks and match day roles, just to name a few of the issues he has addressed pre season.

We have been fortunate again to fill the majority of coaching roles with following people, who would be the envy of many other clubs:

Thanks to all the coaches, and I wish you all best for the Season.

By now most of the teams would have appointed managers, and I thank all those people who put their hands up to undertake this role, which is a very important one to assist coaches, and being a conduit between the various teams and the Committee.

Thank you all for volunteering, without your help the club would not be able to field the players it does.

Game Day Assistance

Both the coaches and managers will require further assistance from parents for various roles, including ground manager, goal umpires, interchange steward etc. Please do not hesitate to contact the coach or manager to assist.


Code of Conduct

The STJFL has a code of conduct, which is available on our website. The essence of this code of conduct is that the game involves kids, coaches are volunteers, umpires are humans and we are not in the big league.

The idea that junior football is supposed to encourage participation, improve skills and most importantly, have fun – we are not playing for sheep stations.


Canteen

This year the Committee have decided to continue with the same set up as last year, by engaging Mick and Sarah of Espresso Allegro to run this years’ canteen. By doing this, it saves parents from supplying and operating the canteen, and allows them to watch their sons play footy, whilst Mick and Sarah provide good quality coffee and food for all spectators.


Sponsors

We are currently in the process of organising sponsors for this year, but I would ask that you support all sponsors who are currently on the board (once again, refer to the website), as they support us.

BBQs

Once again there will be a BBQ held on the Friday night after the under 16 & 18 trainings, which will be supplied free to the boys. This BBQ could not proceed without the support of Tas Meats (Greg Jones) and the Hartz (Michael Cooper). I thank both companies, and once again strongly urge you to support them.


Queenborough Master Plan

I understand the master plan has been approved by the Council, however at this stage nothing has been undertaken.

Justin Young and myself are working closely with the Council for the construction of a net at the southern goals for this year’s season.

The council have allocated the money to erect the net and we are just waiting on confirmation of the planning approval. Watch this space.

Drew Moore recently constructed a storage cupboard within the clubrooms, which will make it so much easier to store all our gear. Thanks Drew.


Website

Bill Trethewie and Sarah Gilman are currently in the process of upgrading our website, and would appreciate any comments or ideas.
